COLUMBUS, Ohio – In the first of five road matches vs. ranked opponents, the No. 31 Ohio State women’s tennis team (3-0, 0-0 B1G) triumphed vs. No. 27 Arizona State (2-2) in a 4-3 thriller Sunday at the Whiteman Tennis Center in Tempe, Arizona. Despite dropping the doubles point, the Buckeyes rallied to win four singles matches to register their first victory against a ranked opponent this season. With Ohio State down 3-2, sophomore Gabriella De Santis and freshman Olivia Sneed notched come from behind three-set wins in singles competition on courts two and six to earn the team victory for the Buckeyes.
“It was a great team effort,” head coach Melissa Schaub said. “Freshman Olivia Sneed was clutch under pressure with the match on the line. The team really responded to the pressure and it’s a great win for us this early in the season.”
The Sun Devils jumped to a 1-0 lead with wins on courts one and two in doubles play. Freshman Anna Sanford and junior Grainne O’Neill fell at No. 1, 6-2, to Desirae Krawczyk and Stephanie Vlad while the 26th-ranked sophomore duo of Gabriella De Santis and Sandy Niehaus dropped a 6-1 decision to Joanna Smith and Kassidy Jump. Sophomore Miho Kowase and Sneed’s doubles match vs. Ebony Panoho and Alex Osborne at No. 3 was unfinished.
Ohio State battled back with four wins in singles competition. Kowase put the first points on the scoreboard for the Buckeyes with a straight-set win vs. Smith on court five. After dropping her first set in a tiebreaker, 7-4, Niehaus downed No. 62 Panoho, 6-7 (4), 6-0, 6-2, on court four, earning her first victory vs. a ranked opponent this season.
In a match between two ranked players, No. 86 Sanford fell to No. 37 Krawczyk on court one, 6-4, 7-5. Despite winning the first set, sophomore Ferny Angeles Paz dropped a 3-6, 6-0, 6-4, decision to Jump at No. 3 to give the Sun Devils a 3-2 advantage vs. the Buckeyes.
The momentum shifted in Ohio State’s favor as De Santis and Sneed rallied back to defeat their opponents and claim the Buckeye victory after dropping their first sets. De Santis evened the score at 3-all with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 2 over Vlad. On court six, No. 71 Sneed posted a 7-5 win in the second to force a third set vs. Osborne. Down 5-4 in the third, Sneed prevailed to claim a 7-5 victory in the set and seal the Buckeye win vs. the Sun Devils.
The Buckeyes will continue their competitive nonconference road slate in South Bend, Ind., as they take on No. 8 Stanford and No. 19 Notre Dame Feb. 8 and 9.
