COLUMBUS, Ohio – In a neutral site match in South Bend, Ind., the No. 31 Ohio State women’s tennis team (3-1, 0-0 B1G) lost to No. 8 Stanford (2-0), 4-1, Saturday morning. Against the Cardinal, the No. 26-ranked Buckeye sophomore tandem of Sandy Niehaus and Gabriella De Santis upset sixth-ranked Taylor Davidson and Carol Zhao in doubles, while sophomore Miho Kowase picked up a win for the Buckeyes in singles.
The Buckeyes will close the weekend at 2 p.m. Sunday when they take on No. 19 Notre Dame in South Bend.
All three doubles matches finished 6-4. The Buckeye duo posted the first win on court one, as De Santis and Niehaus beat Davidson and Zhao, and the Cardinal followed with a victory by No. 12-ranked Caroline Doyle and Ellen Tsay over Buckeye freshmen Anna Sanford and Olivia Sneed on court two. On court three, Buckeye sophomores Kowase and Ferny Angeles Paz lost to Krista Hardebeck and Lindsey Kostas to give Stanford the doubles point.
Doyle, ranked 13th in singles, put Stanford up 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Niehaus on court three. On court two, No. 12-ranked Davidson topped De Santis, 6-0, 6-3. Kowase then put the Buckeyes on the board, downing Tsay, 6-4, 6-0, on court five. In a tight match, No. 4-ranked Zhao beat No. 86 Sanford on court one, 6-4, 7-5, to clinch the win for the Cardinal.
The Buckeyes on courts four and six were both up a set when play was suspended. On court four, Angeles Paz was leading Hardebeck, 6-4, 3-4, and at No. 6 Sneed, ranked 71st, was up 6-4, 3-2 on Kostas.
