COLUMBUS, Ohio – On the first day of the UT Fall Invite hosted by Tennessee in Knoxville, Tenn., the Ohio State women’s tennis team picked up three singles wins and four doubles victories. Highlighting the day was a shutout win by juniors Sandy Niehaus and Ferny Angeles Paz over the No. 6-ranked doubles team from Arizona State.
The tournament features teams facing off in a dual match style, playing singles vs. one team and doubles in different sessions each day. Friday, the Buckeyes were 3-3 in singles vs. Wake Forest and 3-3 in doubles against Arizona State.
Saturday, the Buckeyes will face Tennessee in singles at 10 a.m., followed by doubles vs. the Volunteers at noon.
In singles vs. Wake Forest Friday, Niehaus downed No. 84-ranked Kimmy Guerin in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. Junior Miho Kowase was a 6-4, 6-2 winner over Anna Ulyashchenko and sophomore Olivia Sneed defeated Joanna Zalewski in three sets, 3-6, 7-5, 6-1.
In doubles vs. the Sun Devils, Niehaus and Angeles Paz, who recently reached the final of the ITA Midwest Regional, won 6-0 over No. 6-ranked Vlad and Krawczyk. Kowase and Sneed downed Panoho/Osborne, 7-5. In the second round, Niehaus paired with freshman Andrea Ballinger for a 6-4 win against Arizona State’s Jump and Hampton.
