Four Buckeyes Advance in Singles, Two Doubles Teams Reach Quarterfinals at Regionals – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – On Saturday, four Buckeyes advanced to the singles Round of 16 and two doubles teams won to reach the quarterfinals in the ITA Midwest Regional Championships at the Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Sunday, play begins at 10 a.m. with doubles quarterfinals, followed by doubles semifinals. The singles round of 16 is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Live stats and video will be available on the tournament website: go.osu.edu/wtenregional2015.
In Round of 16 doubles Saturday, the tandem of junior Miho Kowase and sophomore Anna Sanford topped Northwestern’s Rischbieth/Or, 8-3, and the duo of juniors Ferny Angeles Paz and Sandy Niehaus beat Closs/Miller from Notre Dame, 8-4.
In the doubles quarterfinals, Angeles Paz/Niehaus will face No. 4 seed Ruder-Hook/Minor from Michigan and Sanford/Kowase will go up against No. 3 seed Kwong/Vias of Illinois.
Two rounds of singles play were held Saturday. In the first round, Angeles Paz topped Notre Dame’s Brooke Broda, 6-2, 6-2, while senior Grainne O’Neill fell to Illinois’ Daniela Pedraza Nova, 7-5, 6-4. Niehaus, Kowase and Sanford all had byes.
In the second round, Sanford and Angeles Paz won in straight sets, with Sanford downing Illinois’ Ines Vias, 6-1, 6-1 and Angeles Paz topping Patricia Lancranjan of DePaul, 6-2, 6-2.
Niehaus and Kowase both advanced in three sets. Niehaus, a 13-16 seed, defeated the Illini’s Pedraza Nova, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4, while Kowase, a 5-8 seed, was a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 winner over ND’s Closs.
Singles Round of 16 play includes Niehaus taking on top seed Quinn Gleason of Notre Dame, Kowase facing No. 9-12 seed Erin Larmer of Northwestern and Sanford playing Michigan’s Fahey, a 9-12 seed. Angeles Paz will go up against No. 3 seed Alexis Casati of Illinois.
Winners of both the singles and doubles draws earn a berth in the ITA National Indoor Championships. The doubles championship is slated to be played Monday, with the singles championship set for Tuesday. All qualifying and main draw matches in the tournament, which runs through Tuesday, will be played indoors.
