Buckeye Teams Set to Face Off for ITA Midwest Regional Doubles Title – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – An Ohio State duo will claim the program’s first ITA Midwest Regional doubles title Monday in Ann Arbor. The duos of junior Miho Kowase and sophomore Anna Sanford and juniors Ferny Angeles Paz and Sandy Niehaus each posted two wins Sunday to earn a berth in the championship match. The winning duo will claim a spot in the ITA National Indoor Championships.
In addition, Niehaus and Angeles Paz both won in the singles round of 16 to advance to Monday’s quarterfinals. Niehaus upset the tournament’s top seed, with Angeles Paz defeating the No. 3 seed.
The doubles championship will be held at 9 a.m. Monday, followed by the singles quarterfinals and semifinals. Michigan is serving as the tournament host, with all matches inside the Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor.
The Buckeye tandem of Kowase and Sanford beat No. 3 seed Kwong/Vias of Illinois, 8-4, in the quarterfinals before an 8-6 win victory over Eastern Michigan’s Supejova/Martinovska in the semifinals. Angeles Paz and Niehaus topped Michigan’s Ruder-Hook/Minor, the No. 4 seed, in the quarterfinals 8-5 and then posted an 8-5 victory against the No. 2 seed of Rooney and Larner from Northwestern. Both Buckeye duos are 5-8 seeds.
The doubles teams are the first from Ohio State to reach the regional doubles championship match since Kristy Dascoli and Monica Rincon in 2000.
One round of singles was held Sunday. No. 13-16 seed Niehaus downed No. 1 seed and No. 93 ranked Quinn Gleason of Notre Dame, 6-3, 6-7, 6-2. Angeles Paz won her third match of the main draw, topping No. 3 seed Alexis Casati of Illinois, 6-3, 7-6.
No. 5-8 seed Sanford lost in three sets to No. 9-12 seed Kate Fahey of Michigan, 3-6, 7-6, 6-1, while No. 5-8 seed Kowase lost to No. 9-12 seed Erin Larner of Northwestern, 6-4, 6-4.
In the quarterfinals Monday, Niehaus will face No. 5-8 seed Brienne Minor of Michigan and Angeles Paz will go up against Lauren Chypyha of Wisconsin, another 5-8 seed.
Winners of both the singles and doubles draws earn a berth in the ITA National Indoor Championships. The singles championship is set for Tuesday. All qualifying and main draw matches in the tournament, which runs through Tuesday, will be played indoors.
