Buckeyes Advance to Doubles Round of 16, Singles Draw Announced at ITA Midwest Regionals – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Play continued Friday at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships at the Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, Mich., as two Buckeye doubles tandems advanced to the round of 16. Singles main draw action begins Saturday, with five Buckeyes in the 48-player bracket.
Doubles is slated to begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, with singles to follow starting at 10 a.m. Live stats and video will be available on the tournament website: go.osu.edu/wtenregional2015.
Both doubles teams won second round matches with an 8-4 score after a bye in the first round. The tandem of junior Miho Kowase and sophomore Anna Sanford downed Akron’s Geier/Maksimova, while the duo of juniors Ferny Angeles Paz and Sandy Niehaus beat Fisher/Sofi of DePaul.
The tandem of freshman Andrea Ballinger and senior Grainne O’Neill lost two matches in a tiebreaker. They fell to Azcui/Fevralev of Western Michigan in the first round, 8-7 (6) and then lost in consolation to Kulikovskaya/Slizovskaya of Detroit, 8-7 (2).
In qualifying singles, Nicole Flower lost in the third round to Melina Lyubimirova, 6-3, 6-3, to end her run.
In the singles main draw, Kowase and Sanford are 5-8 seeds and received first round byes, with Niehaus a 13-16 seed and also receiving a bye. O’Neill will face Daniela Pedraza Nova of Illinois in the first round and Angeles Paz will take on Notre Dame’s Brooke Broda.
Winners of both the singles and doubles draws earn a berth in the ITA National Indoor Championships. The doubles championship is slated to be played Monday, with the singles championship set for Tuesday. All qualifying and main draw matches in the tournament, which runs through Tuesday, will be played indoors.
