COLUMBUS, Ohio – The streak continues for the No. 18 Ohio State men’s soccer team. For the second time in two weeks, Christian Soldat was the hero. The junior forward scored the gamewinning goal with 13 seconds remaining to give his team the 1-0 shutout win over Cleveland State Wednesday night at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. With the exciting finish, the Buckeyes (9-4-2), unbeaten in ten in a row, extend their program-record win streak to eight-consecutive matches.
“We’ve been fortunate but we keep finding a way to get the result,” head coach John Bluem said. “We are very good defensively and making it difficult for our opponents. As long as we continue to do that, we will get our chances to score. The chance came very late tonight and thankfully Soldat found a little bit of an opening.”
With 20 seconds left on the clock, Danny Jensen put his whole body on the line and won a 50-50 ball near the far post. After getting back to his feet, Jensen found Jacob Duska, who fired a shot towards net but was blocked. However, Soldat was in perfect position to net home the gamewinning goal at89:47. Both Jensen and Duska were credited with the assists.
“Our team never gives up,” Soldat said. “We know the clock is winding down, so we push everyone forward. A shot block fell right to me and I was able to finish it off. We didn’t have the best day today, but we are on such a hot streak right now. We are hitting every stride together and when it comes down to it, we will put one away.”
The Buckeyes collect their fourth-consecutive shutout and sixth overall during the eight-match win streak. The OSU defense limited the Vikings to just four shots overall, including one shot on goal. Chris Froschauer, the three-time defending Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, improves to 9-4-2 with his league-best seventh shutout of 2015 making one save. Ohio State improves to 6-1-1 at home and unbeaten in six straight matches in Columbus.
Soldat had the best chance to find a score in the first half in the 28th minute when he received a through ball pass from Abdi Mohamed at the near side. However, his shot was saved by a leaping CSU keeper Aleksandar Drobac. Froschauer made a big save in the 27th when he rushed out to the top of the 18 to deny Jake Lagania.
Overall, shots were 12-4 in favor of the Buckeyes, while Ohio State held a 5-2 lead in corners.
“Our team is going to respond well from this like we’ve done all year long,” Bluem said. “We will need to recover and rest and be as ready as we can come Sunday afternoon on the road.”
The Buckeyes will next prepare for a key Big Ten match at Rutgers at 1 p.m. ET Sunday in Piscataway, N.J. The first-place Buckeyes have 10 points, while the Scarlet Knights are tied for second with nine points. The match will be broadcasted live on BTN.
