COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 18 Ohio State men’s soccer team (9-5-2, 3-2-1 B1G) saw its eight-match win streak come to an end on the road at Rutgers (10-4-1, 4-3-0 B1G) Sunday afternoon in Piscataway, N.J. Ohio State’s longest winning streak in program history was snapped by a final score of 1-0. With the loss, the Buckeyes drop to second in the Big Ten standings with 10 points, while the Scarlet Knights move to first place with 12 points.
Jason Wright scored his Big Ten-best 13th goal of the year in the 74th minute when he found a netter off a rebound in front of net for the eventual game-winner for Rutgers.
The Buckeyes had several great looks at goal, but couldn’t capitalize in a highly-competitive conference match. In the first half, Liam Doyle struck a free kick from 20 yards out just over the bar at the near post in the 11th minute. A shot from the top of the 18 by Danny Jensen was saved from the near post by RU keeper David Greczek.
In the second half, Yaw Amankwa caused a turnover in RU territory but his shot sailed over the crossbar in the 52nd. Christian Soldat had a shot on target in the 65th but was saved. The Buckeyes’ best look of the day came during the 69th minute following an OSU corner, but shots by Amankwa and Jensen were both blocked in front of the net. A final corner kick in the 76th minute was denied by Rutgers.
Overall, the Scarlet Knights held a slight advantage in shots, 16-15, while Rutgers had a 7-5 lead in corners. Chris Froschauer made a season-high eight saves in the match, but falls to 9-5-2.
Ohio State will next close out the home schedule with two big conference matches. The Buckeyes face No. 20 Maryland at 7 p.m. ET Oct. 31 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The team will then close out league play vs. Michigan Nov. 4. As always, admission is free. The Terrapins have nine points, while the Wolverines follow with eight points with a week to go in the regular season.
