Ohio State Sweeps Doubleheader vs. West Virginia and Cleveland State – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 31 Ohio State women’s tennis team (2-0, 0-0 B1G) kicked off the spring season with a pair of shutout wins vs. West Virginia and Cleveland State in its home-opening doubleheader Thursday at the Varsity Tennis Center. With the victories, the Buckeyes extend their home win streak to 14 games to tie the program record first set in 2002. The squad finished a perfect 12-0 at the Varsity Tennis Center last season.
In the first match of the doubleheader vs. West Virginia, Ohio State clinched the doubles point behind wins on courts one and three. Freshman Olivia Sneed and sophomore Miho Kowase defeated Lyn Yee Choo and Yvon Martinez at No. 3, 6-2, while freshman Anna Sanford and junior Grainne O’Neill won 6-3 on court one vs. Kaja Mrjole and Ikttesh Chahal to earn the doubles point for the Buckeyes.
The Buckeyes captured all six singles matches in straight sets vs. the Mountaineers to earn their first shutout of the day. On court six, O’Neill cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory vs. Martinez, while sophomore Sandy Niehaus downed Choo, 6-2, 6-1, on court three. Reigning B1G Freshman of the Year Gabriella De Santis clinched the match for the Buckeyes with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 4.
The two nationally ranked freshmen on the Ohio State squad earned their first wins at the Varsity Tennis Center with wins on courts one and five. Playing on court one, No. 86 Sanford posted a 6-1, 6-3, win vs. Mrjole to give Ohio State a 5-0 advantage vs. West Virginia, and No. 71 Olivia Sneed topped Habiba Shaker, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 5. After winning the first set, sophomore Miho Kowase battled back in the second to force a tiebreaker vs. Chahal on court four. Kowase triumphed, 7-5, in the tiebreaker to seal the shutout victory for the Buckeyes.
After a short intermission, the Buckeyes were back in action vs. Cleveland State. In doubles, the Buckeyes downed the Vikings in the first two matches off the court to gain a 1-0 advantage. Kowase and Sneed teamed up to notch the first doubles win, 6-1, vs. Cleveland State’s Mathilde Orange and Princess Gbadamosi. The 26th-ranked duo of De Santis and Niehaus quickly followed with a 6-1 victory vs. Lauren Golick and Ellen Folkers.
In singles play, Niehaus posted the first victory for the Buckeyes with a 6-1, 6-0, win vs. Jana Schober on court three. Kowase topped Victoria Bensimon at No. 4, while redshirt junior Nicole Flower secured the win for the Buckeyes on court six, defeating Gbadamosi, 6-2, 6-2. No. 86 Sanford notched a 6-3, 6-3 victory on court one vs. Golick and De Santis topped Orange, 6-3, 6-2. Playing against No. 106 Folkers, O’Neill notched her first career win vs. a ranked opponent with a 6-3, 6-2 victory to seal the second shutout of the day for the Buckeyes.
Looking ahead, the Scarlet and Gray will spend the month of February on the road competing in five matches along with the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic in Montgomery, Ala. They kick off their road slate Sunday vs. Arizona State in Tempe, Arizona. The squad will return to the Varsity Tennis Center Sunday, March 1 to take on Baylor at 11 a.m.
