COLUMBUS, Ohio – On the strength of a two-goal, one-assist performance from freshman Maddy Humphrey, the Ohio State field hockey team picked up its first win of the 2014 season, downing in-state rival Miami, 3-2, on Friday afternoon at Buckeye Varsity Field.
Humphrey scored a pair of first half goals and assisted on a tally by Emma Royce that have Ohio State a 3-1 halftime lead. In the second half, freshman goalie Liz Tamburro thwarted the RedHawks with 10 stops, marking the third straight game in her young career that she has registered double-digit saves.
Ohio State got on the board first just over 11 minutes into the first half when Humphrey, a native of Virginia Beach, Va., took a crossing pass in front of the cage from senior Kaitlyn Wagner and beat Miami goalie Alysa Xavier from five yards out. The RedHawks answered nearly 15 minutes later, however, as Geagy Pritchard collected a pass from Shannon Regan and freed herself for a shot that tricked back Tamburro in the lower right corner of the cage.
The Buckeyes quickly seized the momentum back, however, as Humphrey made an impressive individual effort to dribble into the circle and create enough space to send a shot in from 10 yards out. Less than two minutes later, Ohio State increased the lead to 3-1 when Royce scored off a penalty corner with assists from Peanut Johnson and Humphrey.
The score remained 3-1 for much of the second half, despite offensive pressure from Miami that resulted in 15 shots and 11 penalty corners. Tamburro was stellar in the cage once again, making all 10 of her saves after the intermission, several from point-blank range.
The RedHawks trimmed Ohio State’s lead to 3-2 with just over four minutes remaining on Pritchard’s second goal of the game, but that is as close as Miami would get.
For the game, the Buckeyes were outshot 18-13 and Miami held a 13-4 edge in penalty corners, 11 of which came in the second half. Tamburro’s counterpart in goal, Xavier, stopped seven shots.
Ohio State returns to action next Friday, Sept. 12, when it travels to Athens to face Ohio University. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
