COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s soccer team fell to Akron, 3-1, Wednesday night at Bert L. & Iris S. Wolstein Field at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The match was the Buckeyes’ Connor Senn Memorial Game, which raised more than $1,300 to benefit the Connor Senn Memorial Fund and the Davis Heart & Lung Research Institute at the Wexner Medical Center.
“It’s great to see the tradition of this game carried on for so long now,” head coach John Bluem said. “We had great support from our students and fans tonight for an important cause and we want to thank everyone for coming out and watching the Buckeyes.”
Under the lights in front of crowd of approximately 1,400 fans, the first half between the Zips was action-packed. Akron took a 1-0 lead during the 12th minute before the Buckeyes claimed the equalizer on sophomore forward Danny Jensen’s first goal of the season in the 16th minute. However, Akron capitalized on an OSU defense miscue for an unassisted score and added a third and final goal midway through the second half to claim the in-state match win. The Buckeyes fall to 2-2-3 on the season, while the Zips improve to 4-2-1 overall in 2014.
“We felt like we gave up some bad goals tonight and they are a very good attacking team,” head coach John Bluem said. “The second goal really hurt us after we were able to give them some problems defensively. They were the better team today but another night it could have been a different outcome.”
Akron earned its first goal of the match in the 12th minute of play. With a finish in front of the net, Sam Gainford was credited for the score, while Sean Sepe assisted on the play. The Buckeyes made it a 1-1 contest just five minutes later when Jensen gained possession, beating the keeper from the near post with a nifty right-footed flick at 16:15.
A costly turnover by the Buckeye defense put the Zips up 2-1 in the 34th when Sepe gained possession deep in OSU territory and sent a shot into the back right of the net at 34:26. At half, Akron held a 10-6 advantage in shots.
Freshman forward Marcus McCrary had the team’s best chance of the second half in the opening minute of play, but his sliding shot in front of net went wide of goal to keep it at a 2-1 deficit. The Zips then made it 3-1 when Adam Najem headed in a cross from Gainford in front of net at 75:11.
Ohio State received a penalty kick opportunity in the 82nd minute, but junior Liam Doyle’s shot was denied by Fenlason who guessed right to make the save.
Senior goalkeeper Alex Ivanov collected nine saves and falls to 2-2-3 overall. Overall, Ohio State was outshot 19-10 vs. Akron, while corners were 6-2 in favor of the Zips.
A moment of silence took place in remembrance of Connor Senn, a freshman on the OSU squad who passed away during a match at Akron Sept. 26, 2001, from a congenital heart defect.
The Buckeyes will next travel to Dayton for a day match at 1 p.m. ET Saturday from Baujan Field.
