COLUMBUS, Ohio – Despite a two-goal performance from senior Kaitlyn Wagner, the Ohio State field hockey team dropped a 6-3 decision to No. 11 Louisville on Tuesday afternoon in Louisville, Ky. With the loss, the Buckeyes are 3-5 overall while Louisville improves to 7-1.
The Cardinals, coming off a 3-2 victory over then-No. 1 ranked North Carolina on Saturday, jumped quickly out of the gates, scoring just 2:20 into regulation on an unassisted goal by Lotta Kahlert. For the next 14 minutes, each team settled in defensively until a flurry of four goals within an 11 minute span late in the first half turned the game into a offensive showcase.
At the 16:35 mark, Wagner found the back of the cage for her first goal of the game, knotting the score a 1-1. Just three and a half minutes later, Shannon Sloss scored her fifth goal of the season for Louisville, giving the Cardinals the lead back at 2-1. Louisville extended that lead to 3-1 24:46 into the first half on a Becca Maddock tally, but Wagner responded just a minute later with a goal off a penalty corner to make the score 3-2.
That’s the way the score stayed through halftime, but Louisville struck again just 5:26 into the second half when Hailey Netherton scored to make the score 4-2. Peanut Johnson, who finished with a goal and an assist, drew the Buckeyes to within one, 4-3, on her fourth goal of the season at the 43:55 mark, but that’s as close as Ohio State would get. Louisville scored at the with 20 minutes to play in the second half and again with just 13 seconds left to its final margin of victory. The final goal came on a penalty stroke.
In addition to Wagner and Johnson, Ohio State also received an assist from Morgan Kile and Maddy Humphrey, this week’s Big Ten Freshman of the Week. Humphrey and Johnson now have at least one point in each of the last four games.
In goal, freshman Liz Tamburro stopped four shots while her counterparts, Sydney King and Elina Pereira, made one save. Louisville outshot Ohio State, 17-7, and held a 5-2 edge in penalty corners.
The Buckeyes return to action on Sunday, Sept. 28, when they host seventh-ranked Penn State at Buckeye Varsity Field. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
