UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Ohio State men’s soccer team¬ suffered its first loss of the 2014 season Sunday afternoon, falling 1-0 at No. 10 Penn State at Jeffrey Field in University Park, Pa. The Buckeyes (2-1-3, 1-1-0 B1G) held the Nittany Lions (6-0-1, 2-0-0) scoreless for the majority of the contest before Penn State collected the only goal of the match midway through the second half to earn the conference win. Down 1-0 with less than 20 minutes in regulation, the Buckeyes continued to battle, but couldn’t find the equalizer in a tough road environment in front of 1,900 fans. The team earned five corners in the final moments of the match, but Penn State was able to clear away the OSU pressure to earn its Big Ten-best sixth shutout of the year. The Nittany Lions netted in the lone goal during the 63rd minute when Connor Maloney dribbled past the OSU defense to force Ohio State goalkeeper Alex Ivanov outside of the goalkeeper box. Maloney then sent a quick pass to the far post to set up an open net goal for Kyle MacDonald at 62:42. Ivanov had a valiant effort to keep it a one-goal match and picked up a season-high 10 saves. He falls to 2-1-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play. Sophomore forward Danny Jensen had a great look from eight yards out during the 60th minute, but PSU goalkeeper Andrew Wolverton made the kick save to keep it scoreless. Penn State controlled possession for the majority of the opening period, collecting a 10-2 advantage on shots, while Ivavov collected three saves in front of net. Ohio State’s best chance was on a counterattack during the 40th minute with a 3-on-1 opportunity, but an outlet pass to an open Jensen was off target to end the OSU threat. The Buckeye backfield held strong, clearing away four first-half corners by the Nittany Lions. Overall, Penn State outshot the Buckeyes 22-6, while both teams notched six corners. The Buckeyes are back in action at 7 p.m. ET Wednesday against in-state foe Akron at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The contest vs. the Zips will be the Connor Senn Memorial Match.
