COLUMBUS, Ohio – Peanut Johnson scored off a feed from freshman Maddy Humphrey 3:31 into overtime to lift to the Ohio State field hockey team (2-3) to a 3-2 victory over Ball State (3-2) on Sunday at Buckeye Varsity Field. Johnson’s goal capped a big day for the junior, as she finished with a goal and an assist in the win.
Ohio State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to back-to-back goals from freshman Annabel Sams just 1:20 a part. Sams, a native of Kingston, England, scored off a cross from Johnson in the circle at the 7:10 mark of the first half and then quickly extended the Buckeye advantage when he notched another goal from seven yards out. Her second tally was assisted by Humphrey.
Ball State refused to go away, however, and cut the lead to 2-1 on a Bethany Han goal that was tipped in off a penalty corner with 13 minutes remaining in the first half. The score stay at 2-1 through halftime and into much of the second half, until the Cardinals were finally able to push across the equalizer with 11:00 remaining. Merinda Morley scored off a penalty corner with assists from Tori Widrick and Bianca Velez.
Ohio State was able to put pressure on the Ball State defense late in the second half and had several scoring opportunities on penalty corners, but Ball State goalie Shelby Henley was up to the task, stopping three second-half shots, including one at point blank range by Emma Royce.
In overtime, Ohio State controlled much of the possession in its offensive zone. The game-winning goal was set up when Humphrey stole a pass deep in Ball State’s zone and then fed Johnson, who was racing down the left sideline. She put the ball past Henley to the lower left of the cage. It was Humphrey’s second assist on the day. In the last three games, the freshman from Virginia Beach, Va., has two goals and three assists.
The Buckeyes outshot Ball State, 20-8, and held a 8-7 edge in penalty corners. Freshman goalie Liz Tamburro stopped four shots (two in each half).
Ohio State returns to action on Friday, Sept. 19, when it opens Big Ten play by hosting defending tournament champion Michigan State at 3 p.m.
