COLUMBUS, Ohio – A two-goal spurt by Rutgers in the second half lifted the Scarlet Knights to a 3-2 win over Ohio State on Friday in Piscataway, N.J. With the loss, the Buckeyes are 4-8 overall and 0-4 in the Big Ten while Rutgers improves to 6-6 and 1-4 in conference.

Rutgers got on the scoreboard first, getting a goal from Sofia Walia on a penalty corner 12:44 into the contest. The shot got past goalie Liz Tamburro to the upper left corner of the cage. From there, however, the Buckeyes’ defense started to tighten, and Ohio State’s offense finally broke through at the 28:37 mark of the first half. Freshman Annabel Sams came racing down the right sideline, and her shot from 15 yards out was tipped in by fellow freshman Maddy Humphrey, who was positioned perfectly in front of the goal. For Humphrey, it was her team-leading ninth goal of the season.

Tamburro ensured that the game would remain tied at halftime when she made a full extension diving save on a shot by Rutgers’ Rachel Yancy with less than three minutes to play before regulation. It was her lone save in the half.

Rutgers was able to seize the momentum early in the second half thanks to a pair of goals in a five-minute span that gave the Scarlet Knights a 3-1 lead. Alyssa Bull got the rally started off a pass from Yancy with a shot that took an unlucky bounce past Tamburro, and five minutes later Katie Champion added another score thanks to an assist from Jasmine Cole.

Emma Royce brought Ohio State to within one, 3-2, with a goal off a penalty corner in the 63rd minute that was assisted by Peanut Johnson and Humphrey. The goal was Royce’s fifth of the season. That’s as close as Ohio State would get, however, as Humphrey had the best scoring chance late in the second half but her shot off a pass from Sams went wide of the cage.

Johnson and Humphrey, the fourth highest scoring tandem in the Big Ten, now have at least one point in six of the last eight games.

Rutgers finished with a 14-9 edge in shots and each goalie made three saves. The Buckeyes return to action on Sunday when it hosts Kent State at 1 p.m. At the game, Ohio State will celebrate Team Victoria Day, in honor of 15-year-old New Albany High School student Victoria. The game is a Grey Out in support of brain cancer research.
