COLUMBUS, Ohio – Opening a weekend of swimming and diving action at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion, the Ohio State women’s team secured 180.5 points Friday evening. The Buckeyes are currently in third-place, trailing Virginia and Florida, which finished day one in first and second-place, respectively.
The meet kicked off with the 200 freestyle relay. Ohio State put up a solid 1:31.40 for third-place in the event behind swims from Michelle Williams, Phoebe Cater, Aliena Schmidtke and Annie Jongekrijg.
Junior Alex Norris continued building early momentum for the Buckeyes with a fourth-place showing in the 500 freestyle. With a time 4:43.16, Norris shaved nearly two seconds off her preliminary time.
In the 200 individual medley, the Scarlet and Gray had one competitor in the A-Final, Ashley Vance. A sophomore this season, Vance finished in a season-best time of 2:00.97, picking up nine points toward the team effort.
Williams, a junior standout for the Buckeyes, took fourth in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.82. She was followed by teammate Schmidtke, who touched sixth. Between the two, Ohio State gained 28 points from the event’s A-Final alone.
The final swimming event was the 400 medley relay, which resulted in a 10th-place Buckeye effort. Lauren Davis, Rachael Dzierzak, Phoebe Cater and Kelly Ann Baird all contributed, finishing 3:44.53 as a unit.
In diving action, sophomore Taylor Ford took fifth on the 3-meter apparatus with a score of 296.40.
Competition at the Ohio State Invitational will resume tomorrow with preliminary races starting at 10 a.m. and finals scheduled for 6 p.m.
