Buckeyes Earn First Road Win of 2012 – Ohio State Buckeyes

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The 64th-ranked Ohio State women’s tennis team defeated Louisville, 4-3, Wednesday evening in Louisville, Ky. The victory is the first on the road for the Buckeyes (4-5, 0-1 Big Ten) and the 600th career match for head coach Chuck Merzbacher.
“Louisville is a very tough place to play,” Merzbacher said after the match. “Our men’s team told us how slow the courts are here. We did a great job with doubles and everyone battled well in singles. Even the ones we didn’t get, everyone competed well on the road. We have a big tennis weekend coming up for both the women and the men.”
Ohio State returns home to face No. 73 DePaul at 2 p.m. Friday in the Varsity Tennis Center before taking on No. 31 Arkansas at 11 a.m. Sunday.
The Scarlet and Gray earned their second doubles sweep of the season against the Cardinals (4-5, 0-0 Big East) after taking all three matches against Dayton Jan. 21.
Fidan Manashirova and Gabby Steele downed Louisville’s Julia Fellerhoff and Mandy Brown, 8-2, on court three before the Buckeye tandem of Noelle Malley and Kelsey Haviland notched an 8-6 win over Sarah Miller and Rebecca Shine on court two. Kara Cecil and Kelsey Dieters capped the sweep for Ohio State with an 8-5 victory against Manuela Velasquez and Amelia Harris at No. 1.
The Buckeyes reeled off three singles wins in straight sets to clinch the match with a 4-0 score before Louisville claimed the final three decisions. Manashirova, ranked 123rd nationally in singles, finished first for Ohio State, defeating Shine, 6-2, 6-3, on court two. Steele followed up with a 6-2, 6-3 win on court five over Harris before Haviland sealed the victory by winning 6-4, 6-2, against Brown on court three.
