Ohio State Downs DePaul, 5-2 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 64th-ranked Ohio State women’s tennis team won its second match in three days, defeating No. 71 DePaul, 5-2, at home Friday evening.
The Buckeyes continue their homestand at 11 a.m. Sunday against No. 31 Arkansas in the Ohio State Varsity Tennis Center. Arkansas and DePaul face off at 10 a.m. Saturday in the VTC.
The match started in dramatic fashion as the Buckeyes (5-5, 0-1 Big Ten) and Blue Demons (8-3, 0-0 Big East) battled through a two-hour doubles contest before the Scarlet and Gray claimed four of six singles decisions.
“DePaul is a well-coached and well-prepared team,” Chuck Merzbacher, Ohio State head coach, said. “They bring a lot of energy and fight to each contest. Today we just matched their intensity. It was a good team win for us.”
Fidan Manashirova and Gabby Steele opened doubles action by taking an 8-5 victory against Kelsey Lawson and Cali Gustafson on court three, the duo’s team-leading 10th win of the season. DePaul responded as Patricia Fargas and Rebeca Mitrea battled Kelsey Haviland and Noelle Malley to a 7-7 tie before notching a victory for the Blue Demons, 9-7, on court two.
As courts two and three finished, the match heated up on court one. Both teams exchanged leads before landing at 6-all. Up 7-6, the Buckeye duo of Kara Cecil and Kelsey Dieters took advantage of a three-point swing to take the game to deuce against Jasmin Kling and Gia McKnight. Cecil and Dieters forced deuce four additional times in the game before Kling and McKnight finally tied the match at 7-7. After arriving at an 8-all score, the Buckeye tandem powered its way to a 7-2 tiebreaker win, giving Ohio State a 1-0 lead heading into singles.
In singles, Steele pushed her winning streak to five matches with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Mitrea on court five. Dieters followed up by downing Lawson, 7-5, 6-3, on court four.
Kling, ranked 105th-nationally, put DePaul on the board with a win on court one over Cecil, but Haviland clinched the victory for Ohio State after defeating McKnight, 6-4, 6-3, on court three.
“It is a nice win to get under our belt,” Haviland said. “DePaul is a dangerous team that has beaten some highly ranked teams. I’m glad we got the win and can put it behind us.”
Dittmer’s 7-6 (2), 3-6, 10-6 win over Carolin Neumann on court six wrapped up the scoring for the Buckeyes and set the final score at 5-2.
