Las Vegas, Nevada –
Catcher Melissa Rennie is blogging about the Buckeyes’ travels and experiences as Ohio State competes in the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic at UNLV this weekend
Day 1 in VEGAS BABY!
Thursday, 1:01 p.m.: The Buckeyes board our full flight to Vegas, ready to leave 46 degree and foggy Columbus.
1:14 p.m.: Our blue and orange Southwest plane pushed off from gate A3 of Port Columbus International Airport; a very interesting flight for the Bucks began with a live Ne-Yo concert performed by our lovely SID Alex Morando.
2:41 p.m.: Touch down in LAS VEGAS! Pacific Time Zone “THE BUCKS IN VEGAS BABBYYYY!” – Vanessa Spears
3:24 p.m.: Got to the Hotel – only 1 queen size bed per room, so some major roomie bonding time
4:30 p.m.: Went to the lobby to head to dinner and had a big surprise visit from 2nd base alum, Whitney Cooper and her “pintrest” brownies – yum, yum!
5:30 p.m.: Arrived at dinner at Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant
7:00 p.m.: Got back to hotel and a team meeting — everyone is pumped for the weekend!
Day 2
Friday 8:00 a.m.: My roomie Anne and I are up and ready! It is 43 degrees and sunny in Sin City; we are off to breakfast and ready to take 2 today!
9:16 a.m.: Leave for the field
Pre-Game Warm-Up- Shout out to Indiana for saving the day and allowing us to use one of their pitching screens, so our Gold Medalist could throw us some BP!
Game 1: Tough loss to Texas Tech, but the Buckeyes showed great effort while playing in a sandbox rather than a snow pile!
Game 2: Down by 2 to San Jose State, but the Bucks fought back hard and won by 3. Three Buckeyes each hit a home run—Big E, Letta, and Lee Lee.
Capped out the evening with my girl Leesa buying out the candy store and Mott buying water when it was free in the lobby! Tomorrow the Buckeyes take on Long Beach State and UNLV. GO BUCKS!
Day 3
8:30 am- With an early afternoon game, the team was allowed to eat breakfast whenever they wanted to, so my roommate, Anne and I went to the lobby around 8:30. After breakfast, we went back to our room and prepared for our 2 games.
11:15 am- The Buckeyes loaded the bus for UNLV’s stadium to take on UNLV and Long Beach State.
Game 1- The Bucks played a tough game against the Rebels on their home turf. We scored first with three runs. The game stood at a stand still until UNLV responded and scored one run in each inning—4, 5, and 6. Going into the top of the 7th the score was tied at three apiece. Spears walked, was moved over to second, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored the lead run for the Bucks on another wild pitch to put the Buckeyes ahead by one run going into the bottom of the 7th. Mikayla was able to hold down the mound for the Bucks and continue our winning streak.
Game 2- The Bucks went to battle against Long Beach State scoring a total of 10 runs to win the game 10-5. Four Buckeyes went yard— Conrad, Lee Lee, Letta, and D Bo.
8:40 pm- Since we played so well today, Coach treated the team to the Cali girls’ favorite burger place where we were able to get ice cream thanks to the outies finally conquering the bat game!
Day 3-
6:45 am- Our last day in Vegas was a very early one, so that means that breakfast was early as well.
7:15 am- Loaded the bus and headed to our last game of the tournament to take on Idaho State.
11:35 am- The Buckeyes beat Idaho State 6-2 to conclude the tournament with a 4-1 record. Our team is moving forward and it sure is fun!
1:00 pm- We were dropped off at the strip to grab some lunch and had to be back by 3.
Well…I have to close up my laptop because we are in take off gear and I do not want the flight attendant to yell at me. We are expected to land in Columbus at 11:50pm. Great weekend Buckeyes! Lets keep it going! GO BUCKS!
