No. 55 Ohio State Drops Opener to No. 42 South Florida, 6-1 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 55th-ranked Ohio State women’s tennis team dropped its season opener on the road against No. 42 South Florida Sunday afternoon, 6-1, in Tampa, Fla. The Buckeyes (0-1, 0-0 Big Ten) picked up a win in doubles and one in singles against the Bulls (2-0, 1-0 Big East).
Ohio State kicks off its home slate Jan. 21 with a doubleheader against West Virginia and Dayton. The Buckeyes face the Mountaineers at 1 p.m. before taking on the Flyers at 6 p.m. inside the Varsity Tennis Center.
Against USF, junior Fidan Manashirova earned the lone point for the Scarlet and Gray after downing Fanny Fracassi, 6-4, 6-7, 10-8, at No. 4 singles.
South Florida took the doubles point after defeating the Buckeyes in the first and second doubles spots. At No. 1, Ecaterina Vasenina and Loreta Alonso Martinez beat the 52nd-ranked duo of Kelsey Dieters and Kara Cecil, 8-6. Fracassi and Lucie Rey earned a victory against Manashirova and Kelsey Haviland at No. 2, 8-5. Ohio State took the third doubles match as Noelle Malley and Gabby Steele defeated Danielle Mills and Paula Montoya, 8-3.
Vasenina, ranked 48th nationally in singles, downed Haviland at the top of the singles lineup, 6-2, 6-4, while Martinez bounced back from Steele’s dominant first set to take the match, 0-6, 6-3, 6-2, at the second spot. Mills took a straight-set victory against Cecil, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3.
Alessandra Bonte earned a 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 win against Dieters and Rey wrapped up the sixth singles spot with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 victory over Malley.
