COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 55th-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes women’s tennis team claimed its first victory of the 2012 season with a 7-0 win over West Virginia at home Saturday afternoon.
The Buckeyes (1-1, 0-0 Big Ten) toppled the Mountaineers (0-1, 0-0 Big East) by taking all six singles matches, including five in straight sets, and taking two of three doubles decisions.
The Mountaineers struck first in doubles as the WVU tandem of Emily Mathis and Mary Chupa downed Ohio State’s Fidan Manashirova and Kelsey Haviland on court one, 8-4. The Scarlet and Gray bounced back with a win from Kelsey Dieters and Tiffany Dittmer on court three. The freshman-sophomore duo claimed an 8-3 finish over Catie Wickline and Madison Hromada.
Up 6-4 on court two, Noelle Malley and Gabby Steele fed off an awakening crowd to power through the last two games of their match against Ikttesh Chahal and Veronica Cardenas to pick up the win, 8-6, and the doubles point for the Buckeyes.
Ohio State put any thoughts of an upset behind them as the Buckeyes took the first set on all six courts in singles, including a pair of 6-0 sets from Manashirova and Dieters.
Following Manashirova’s 6-0, 6-1 victory over Chahal on court three, the wins came in a wave for the Scarlet and Gray. In a 10-minute span, Ohio State took matches on courts four, five, six and two, respectively.
Dieters was the first to follow Manashirova. The Shelby Township, Mich., native scored a 6-0, 6-2 win over Cardenas on court four before Noelle Malley notched the match-clinching point for Ohio State with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Wickline on court five.
Moments later, Dittmer moved the score to 5-0 after taking a 6-3, 6-2 decision against Hromada on court six. Steele wrapped up the spree by closing a 6-2, 6-1 win over Chupa on court two.
The action of court one went against the grain as WVU’s Mathis forced the match into a super tiebreaker after taking the second set against Haviland. The two traded points up to a 7-7 score before Haviland pulled away to take the match, 6-3, 3-6, 10-7.
