COLUMBUS, Ohio – The sixth-ranked Ohio State field hockey team claimed a 2-0 victory at James Madison Saturday afternoon at the JMU Field Hockey Complex in Harrisonburg, Va. Juniors Berta Queralt and Danica Deckard each scored a goal for the Buckeyes (2-3) against the Dukes (1-2).
“This team has really grown a lot since the start of preseason,” head coach Anne Wilkinson said. “Today our persistence and discipline paid off.”
With her two points, Queralt, a two-time All-American, is now one point shy of hitting the 100-point milestone to become just the ninth Buckeye in OSU history to claim the three-figure mark. She leads the team with six points (3g, 0a). Deckard, a native of Selinsgrove, Pa., is second on the squad with five points (2g, 1a) this season. Her three points vs. the Dukes marked the second multi-point performance for the Buckeye forward this year.
After a scoreless first half, Deckard and Queralt posted their goals within four minutes of each other. Deckard started the OSU momentum at 60:05 with an unassisted goal with a tip in off a rebound.
Just minutes later, Queralt scored at 64:41 from the center of the circle following a pass by Deckard from the left side, to make it 2-0 and the eventual final score.
The Buckeyes held an 18-3 advantage on shots and an 8-2 lead in penalty corners.
UP NEXT The Buckeyes will next host two non-conference opponents next weekend as the squad faces Syracuse at 2 p.m. Friday before taking on Old Dominion at 2 p.m. Sunday at Buckeye Varsity Field. The Orange and the Lady Monarchs will play a neutral-site game in Columbus at 2 p.m. Saturday.
