COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 24th-ranked Ohio State men’s soccer team scored twice within the first eight minutes and went on to a 3-0 victory over Hartwick Friday evening at the CCU Soccer Field in the opening game of the Coastal Carolina Tournament in Conway, S.C. The Buckeyes improve to 4-1-1 with their fourth-consecutive victory, while the Hawks drop to 1-2-2 on the season.
Austin McAnena tallied his first goal of year in the sixth minute and Chris Hegngi added one less than two minutes later and another midway through the second half as the Scarlet and Gray exploded for its third game with at least three goals this season. In goal, Matt Lampson made four saves and secured the team’s first shutout of 2011.
After surrendering the first goal of the contest in each of the previous five games, the Buckeyes wasted little time in reversing the streak. Late in the sixth minute, from 25 yards out towards the left side, freshman Kenny Cunningham played McAnena the ball at the top of the 18 where the junior midfielder gathered and shot it to the left side of the net for the early lead.
Hegngi doubled the advantage midway through the eighth minute when he dribbled through the right side and nailed a shot inside the near post. Lampson came up with saves on both of the Hawks’ ensuing shots over the next 10 minutes and neither team would post an attempt beyond the 17th minute before they headed into halftime.
Action picked up midway through the second half as the sides swapped shots until Hegngi followed up on his own attempt originally stopped by the Hawks’ keeper, Tom Buckner, but sent back into play. The junior from Silver Spring, Md., collected the rebound five yards out and stuffed it in from point-blank range.
With the second score, Hegngi became the first Buckeye to tally two goals in a contest since Konrad Warzycha converted a pair of penalty kicks Sept. 5, 2010 vs. Buffalo. The last to do so within live game action was Hegngi himself, leading the Buckeyes to a win over Butler Sept. 18, 2009, during his rookie season.
The Hawks finished with a 9-7 advantage in shots, though Ohio State edged them in corners, 2-1.
The Buckeyes wrap up tournament action at 2:30 p.m. Sunday vs. host Coastal Carolina. The Chanticleers enter their game with Appalachian State Friday night with a 4-1-0 record and a NCAA-leading 17 goals to the team’s credit.
