COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 24 Ohio State men’s soccer team fell to Coastal Carolina and its second-ranked scoring offense in the country, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at the CCU Soccer Field in the final game of the Coastal Carolina Tournament in Conway, S.C. The Buckeyes’ four-game winning streak ends as they drop to 4-2-1 overall and the Chanticleers improve to 5-2-0 on the season.
There is not time to dwell on the loss, however, as Ohio State begins its stretch of three games in nine days vs. 2010 College Cup teams at 7 p.m. Wednesday against Louisville in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The No. 3 Cardinals are 5-1-0 on the season after shutting out Butler, 4-0, Saturday night. The Buckeyes will then play Michigan at home beginning at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 25, and follow it up with a match at fourth-ranked Akron at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 28.
Coastal Carolina’s Ashton Bennett scored both of his team’s goals in the win Sunday. The first came in the 33rd minute after he gathered the ball off a block and shot into the far side. Bennett followed it up midway through the second half with the help of teammate Justin Portillo. This shot came from the right edge of the box and was crossed into the net inside the far post.
In between, the Buckeyes posted a handful of opportunities, led by Omar Vallejo’s two shots. The Chanticleers finished with a 14-7 advantage in shots with Buckeye goalkeeper Matt Lampson saving five of them.
