Herron Named to Second Team Capital One Academic All-District IV – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Alicia Herron, a junior co-captain on the Ohio State softball team, was named to the Capital One Academic All-District IV Second Team for the second time in her career Friday. The third-year starter at shortstop, Herron leads the team with a .358 batting average while maintaining a grade-point average greater than 3.30 in speech and hearing science.
The Cypress, Calif., native becomes the fifth Buckeye in program history and fourth under head coach Linda Kalafatis to be named to an All-District IV team in back-to-back seasons.
“Alicia is a great representation of a student-athlete and somebody Ohio State is proud to have,” Kalafatis said. “She is excellent in the field and in the classroom. She has had a tough year, personally, but I think if you watch her play or watch her around the locker room, you wouldn’t know. I think Alicia deserves all the recognition she gets.”
Herron, who led the Big Ten last season with a .415 batting average, currently ranks fourth in the all-time Ohio State record book with 34 home runs to date. She has started in 156-157 games played in her career, including all 47 games this season for the Scarlet and Gray.
The two-time All-Big Ten selection, Herron leads the Buckeyes this season in multiple categories, including batting average (.358), runs (34), hits (48), doubles (10), triples (3), home runs (8), walks (29), slugging percentage (.657), on-base percentage (.482) and stolen bases (10).
Ohio State (14-33, 3-13 Big Ten) wraps up the 2011 home schedule at 5 p.m. Wednesday against Penn State at Buckeye Field.
