MADISON, Wis. – The Ohio State softball team lost, 8-0, in six innings at Wisconsin Saturday afternoon to conclude the 2011 season. The Badgers (30-23, 9-11 Big Ten) notched a six-run third inning en route to the run-rule victory against the Buckeyes (14-37, 3-17 Big Ten) at Goodman Diamond in Madison.
The Buckeyes made an early pitching change in the bottom of the second as Brittany Goodchild relieved starting pitching Karisa Medrano in the circle.
Goodchild received the loss to fall to 1-2 overall, pitching two innings, allowing one run with two walks and a strikeout. UW reliever Meghan McIntosh improved to 10-9 overall after three innings of work for the Badgers.
After a scoreless first inning, the Badgers claimed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Jennifer Krueger posted a two-out infield single with the bases loaded, scoring Whitney Massey. Freshman first baseman Evelyn Carrillo made a nice diving play to her right to keep the ball in the infield. Goodchild struck out the following batter to get out of the bases loaded jam.
The Scarlet and Gray went back to their original lineup to begin the bottom of the third as Medrano returned to the circle.
Wisconsin extended its lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the third. With the bases loaded, Michelle Mueller knocked a single to left field to plate pinch runner Abby Gregory. Ashley Hanewich notched a one-out, two-run single to left field as sophomore Megan Coletta couldn’t come up with the diving catch to make it, 4-0. The Badgers then scored a run when Mueller was caught between third base and home plate but was able to tally a run following a fielding error on a rundown. The Cardinal and White then plated two additional runs following a sacrifice fly and an RBI single.
Goodchild returned to the circle to start the bottom of the fourth and retired the Badger batters in order. The Buckeyes had good chance to get on the board in the top of the fifth when Coletta led off the at-bat with a double to right center followed by a walk to sophomore catcher Cara Longworth. However, Darrah claimed a strikeout to end the OSU threat.
Seniors Brittany Goodchild, Dee Dee Hillman, Karisa Medrano and Rachael Shepherd were honored before the start of game in part of the Badgers’ Senior Day ceremonies.
