Buckeyes Finish Strong at Thunderbird Invitational – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s tennis team completed its fall schedule Sunday as the team played its final matches at the Arizona State Thunderbird Invitational. Both Buckeye doubles teams earned victories, while a pair of players took singles matches in Tempe, Ariz.
The Scarlet and Gray opened the final day with a pair of doubles wins. The Buckeye duo of Kelsey Haviland and Kara Cecil took its match against Arizona State’s Leighann Sahagun and Sianna Simmons, 9-7. Fidan Manashirova and Gabby Steele followed suit for the Buckeyes, taking an 8-2 decision against Anastasia Putilina and Callie Craig of Utah.
In auxiliary matches, Manashirova picked up a win against California’s Stephanie Chang, 6-0, 6-2. Haviland found herself on the short end of a 7-5, 6-0 decision against Michigan’s Kristin Dodge, while Kelsey Becker fell to ASU’s Joanna Smith, 6-0, 6-2. Steele dropped her second-round consolation match to Karla Bonacic of Kansas State, 6-2, 6-1.
Ohio State finishes the tournament with six singles victories and four doubles wins.
The Buckeyes return to action in January as the team kicks off its dual season. Ohio State travels to Tampa, Fla., to take on the South Florida Bulls Jan. 15 before hosting its first home matches Jan. 21 against West Virginia and Dayton.
