Who to Watch:
Ohio State: Jamee Juarez (Sr., P/3B). She was named the MostOutstanding Player of the Big Ten tournament and is 17-1 since themiddle of March. Juarez, who ranks third all-time in career RBI,owns four OSU career pitching records and her 224 strikeouts thisseason are a single-season record.
Cal State Fullerton: Candace Baker (Sr., P/UTL). For thesecond-consecutive year, she was named first-team All-Big West atboth of her positions. Baker, who is 17-11 in the circle and owns a.276 batting average, went all eight innings and had thegame-winning RBI in Fullerton’s 5-4 win over Ohio State earlierthis season.
Virginia Tech: Angela Tincher (Jr., P). She is a Top 10Finalist for USA Softball Player of the Year and for good reason.Tincher is 37-5 with 22 shutouts and 581 strikeouts in 291.2innings pitched this season. The Buckeyes beat her, 4-0, March 10,but Tincher then no-hit Ohio State March 11.
Canisius: Courtney Piar (Sr., P). A native of nearby MountVernon, Ohio, she is returning home to Central Ohio this weekendhaving won nine of her last 10 decisions to improve to 11-5 in thecircle this season with a 1.61 ERA and 171 strikeouts. Opponentsare batting only .140 against her. The NCAA announced Monday achange in the seeding for the Ohio State softball regionaltournament this weekend at Buckeye Field in Columbus. No. 15Virginia Tech remains the top seed in the regional and Ohio Stateremains the No. 2 seed, but the selection committee has switchedthe seeds, and thus the opening round match-ups, for Cal StateFullerton and Canisius.
Cal State Fullerton was originally given the No. 4 seed and Canisius the No. 3 seed, but those seeds have been switched, meaning the Buckeyes will now face Fullerton Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the 2 vs. 3 game. Virginia Tech will meet Canisius at 5 p.m. Friday in the 1 vs. 4 game as the double-elimination regional gets underway.
