COLUMBUS, Ohio – A six-run third inning and a two-hitter from sophomore Kim Reeder propelled the Ohio State softball team to an 8-0 win in six innings over Wright State Tuesday in game one of a doubleheader at Buckeye Field. The Buckeyes (32-15, 12-2 Big Ten) improve to 13-0 at home this season and 15-0 all-time at Buckeye Field against the Raiders (19-29, 6-7 Horizon).
Reeder (Salinas, Calif./Notre Dame H.S.) fanned five and allowed only two fourth inning singles in improving to 14-6 this season. She retired the first six WSU batters of the game and then six of the last seven.
Junior Brittany Vanderink (Hiram, Ohio/Crestwood) highlighted the Buckeyes’ six-run third inning with a three-run home run for her first collegiate round-tripper. The three RBI on the play marked a career-high for Vanderink, as well.
Ohio State hit for the cycle in the third and totaled seven hits, including Vanderink’s homer, a two-run triple from senior Jamee Juarez (La Puente, Calif./Wilson), an RBI double from sophomore Courtney Pruner (Akron, Ohio/Ellet) and a bases empty double from freshman Sam Marder (Calabasas, Calif./Calabasas) and singles from senior Nycole Koyano (Walnut, Calif./Walnut) and junior Liz Caputo (Riverside, Calif./Riverside Poly).
Senior Christina Douglas (Mesa, Ariz./Dobson) put Ohio State up 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI sacrifice fly to score Pruner, who had walked.
In the fifth, Caputo singled on a line drive off the pitcher and then scored the game-ending run on a double to the wall in centerfield by Marder for Ohio State’s third mercy rule win in its last five games.
Marder tied her career high with three hits as Ohio State out-hit Wright State, 11-2. Marder, who tied a career high with two doubles, drove in one run for her team-leading 44th RBI of the season, which ranks third in a single-season in program history.
Ohio State and Wright State will meet again Tuesday at approximately 5 p.m.
