COLUMBUS, Ohio – Senior Lauren Daykin went 3-for-3 and the Ohio State softball team scored two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to top Indiana, 5-2, Sunday in game one of a doubleheader at Buckeye Field. The Buckeyes (30-15, 11-2 Big Ten) improve to 11-0 at home this season, remain atop the Big Ten standings and notch their 11th 30-win season in program history. Seven of those 30-win seasons have come under 11th-year head coach Linda Kalafatis.
Indiana (21-31, 1-16 Big Ten) scored single runs with two outs in the fourth and sixth innings to close the gap to one run at 3-2, but the Buckeyes’ two runs in their final at bat off four hits sealed their 16th win in their last 19 games.
It was the first career 3-for-3 game for Daykin (Melbourne, Australia/Manatee C.C., Fla.), who drove in a run in the bottom of the sixth inning that gave the Buckeyes a two-run lead.
Sophomore starter Kim Reeder (Salinas, Calif./Notre Dame H.S.) went 5.2 innings for Ohio State to improve to 13-6 this season and 4-1 in the Big Ten. Reeder allowed four hits and two runs, only one of which was earned, and struck out six. Senior Jamee Juarez (La Puente, Calif./Wilson) worked the final 1.1 to earn her fourth save of the season, striking out one.
The Buckeyes used aggressive base running to help generate their three-run third inning. With Daykin on third base and senior Nycole Koyano (Walnut, Calif./Walnut) on second, junior Brittany Vanderink (Hiram, Ohio/Crestwood) singled to left field, scoring Daykin. Vanderink took second on the play and Koyano then bolted for home, sliding around the tag of IU catcher Tory Yamaguchi. While Koyano was putting Ohio State up, 2-0, Vanderink took third and scored two batters later when senior Megan Schwab (Glendale, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain) singled with two outs through the right side. Junior Liz Caputo (Riverside, Calif./Riverside Poly) and sophomore Courtney Pruner (Akron, Ohio/Ellet) also singled in the inning to move base runners into scoring position.
Indiana got a run back in the top of the fourth inning when Yamaguchi singled through the right side with two outs to capitalize on a one-out double by Sarah Padove. Yamaguchi did it again in the sixth inning to score Padove, who had reached on an error, closing Ohio State’s lead to one run at 3-2.
In the sixth, Pruner led off with a single through the right side, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Juarez and scored on Daykin’s third single of the game. Caputo and Koyano both singled and pinch-runner Michelle Reynolds-Parra (Columbus, Ohio/Eastmoor), running for Daykin, scored when IU attempted to get Koyano out at second on her single.
Caputo and Pruner both went 2-for-2 for Ohio State.
Ohio State and Indiana will meet in game two Sunday at approximately 2:15 p.m.
