SETTING THE SCENE
COLUMBUS, Ohio – It has been nearly a month since the Ohio State softball team played a non-conference game, but it will attempt to take a step outside the Big Ten Wednesday when IUPUI visits Buckeye Field for a 5 p.m. doubleheader. It also has been three weeks since the Buckeyes (22-14, 5-1 Big Ten) played at home, where they are 6-0 this season.
Before traveling to Columbus, the Jaguars (8-21, 1-5 Mid-Continent) host Butler Monday and Purdue Tuesday, marking their first match-up this season with an opponent from the Big Ten.
Ohio State’s student radio station will broadcast both games live on its Web site at www.OhioStateSports.com. GameTracker will also have live statistics at www.OhioStateBuckeyes.com.
After having eight consecutive games cancelled because of poor weather, Ohio State pulled off its biggest upset of the season thus far last Friday with a 5-3 win in nine innings at No. 7 Northwestern. The Wildcats, who won the Big Ten last year and played for the national championship, came back for a 5-3 win Saturday, but nonetheless the Buckeyes had taken over first place in the Big Ten and established the program’s best conference start at 5-0.
This weekend, the Buckeyes embark on their third-consecutive and final Big Ten road weekend of the season with games at Illinois (26-15, 5-3) Friday and Saturday and Iowa (30-17, 6-4) Sunday.
OHIO STATE AT BUCKEYE FIELD
Ohio State is 98-10 in non-conference games at Buckeye Field since 11th-year head coach Linda Kalafatis took over the program in 1997. The Buckeyes have won 21-consecutive home non-conference games in a streak that dates back to April 21, 2004 when Kentucky nipped Ohio State, 4-3. So far in 2006, the Buckeyes are 6-0 at home, are batting .361 and own a 1.92 staff earned run average.
Last year at Buckeyes Field, Ohio State went 21-2, batted .350 as a team and owned a 1.58 staff earned run average.
BUCKEYES ATOP IN BIG TEN
At the midway point in the Big Ten season, Ohio State sits in first place in the conference standings for the first time since 2002, when the Buckeyes were in first at 13-3 April 22. Crucial league games await the Buckeyes this weekend on the road, however, at fifth place Illinois (5-3), which knocked off No. 8 Michigan last weekend, and sixth place Iowa (6-4).
Last weekend, the Buckeyes split a pair of games at No. 7 Northwestern, who then also split with Penn State to slip to third place (8-3). Weather has claimed four of Ohio State’s Big Ten games (at 0-6 Michigan State, at fourth-place 4-2 Michigan). The second-place Nittany Lions are 3-1 in the conference and have had six league games cancelled. By rule, Big Ten games are not rescheduled.
OHIO STATE AT A GLANCE
The Buckeyes (22-14, 5-1 Big Ten) have won eight of their last 10 games and 13 of their last 18. After an 11-day layoff that saw eight games cancelled because of weather, Ohio State returned to the field last Friday with an impressive win at No. 7 Northwestern.
Ohio State is hitting .269 as a team, compared to .236 by its opponents. The pitching staff owns a 2.70 ERA, which is nearly a full run lower than the opposition (3.59).
Ohio State’s first three batters in its lineup lead the team in batting, including Nycole Koyano (.304), Brittany Vanderink (.317) and Sam Marder (.344), which helps explain why the Buckeyes have outscored their opponents 27-13 in the first inning this season and 30-14 in the third. The Buckeyes own signature wins at then-No. 7 Northwestern and on neutral fields over then-No. 22 Fresno State, then-No. 17 Cal and then-No. 26 Virginia Tech.
Ohio State has 10 letterwinners and eight starters back from its 2006 squad that went 39-23 and 11-7 in the Big Ten and went to the Tucson Regional of the NCAA tournament. The Buckeyes have led the Big Ten in batting the last two years. Head coach Linda Kalafatis is in her 11th year at Ohio State and is one of three coaches in the Big Ten with more than 600 wins. Since 2000, the Buckeyes are 282-160 for a .640 winning percentage, which ranks third in the Big Ten during that time.
A LOOK AT THE JAGUARS
IUPUI (8-21, 1-5 Mid-Continent Conference) dropped its first 11 games of the season, but snapped the skid with six wins in its next nine outings. The Jaguars, who are 2-12 on the road this season, host Butler Monday and travel to Purdue Tuesday.
IUPUI has nine letterwinners, including five starters, back from its 2006 team that went 13-37 and finished sixth in the Mid-Continent Conference at 8-15. Leading the Jaguars are senior Sarah Needy (.371, 0 HR, 19-21 SB), who is IUPUI’s all-time stolen base leader, and sophomore Cayleigh Harvey (.338, 2 HR). The Jaguars’ pitching staff is led by sophomore Breanna Howell (5-10, 4.20 ERA), who threw all three of IUPUI’s games over the weekend, and senior Angelica Espinosa (3-2, 4.77 ERA). Head coach Maggie Calcaterra is in her second season with the Jaguars.
BUCKEYES VS. JAGUARS
The Buckeyes hold a 3-1 all-time record against the Jaguars. In 2006, Ohio State swept IUPUI 2-0 and 8-0 at Buckeye Field. Their last regular season match-up before last season was in 2001, when the Buckeyes won 8-1.
LAST YEAR: OSU SWEEPS IUPUI
Last year at Buckeye Field, Ohio State topped IUPUI 2-0 and 8-0 to extend its winning streak to a season-best 12 games. In the opener Ohio State got an RBI single in the fifth inning from then-senior Nicole Lancaster to break a scoreless game, while then-freshman Kim Reeder threw a three-hit shutout.
In the nightcap, then-freshman Courtney Pruner threw a two-hit shutout and the Buckeyes scored six runs in the fifth inning for the mercy-rule win. Highlighting the offensive surge was a two-run homer from then-junior Nycole Koyano.
STREAKS ON THE LINE…
The Buckeyes are 17-4 when they score first and also 17-4 when they out-hit their opponent. Ohio State is 13-1 when it both out-hits its opponent and scores first, with the only loss coming in eight innings at Cal State Fullerton March 24.
Junior Brittany Vanderink saw her 12-game hitting streak snapped Friday at Northwestern, but responded with two hits in the game Saturday. Vanderink is batting .340 in her last 14 games. The team’s current best streaks are held by senior Christina Douglas at six games and freshman Sam Marder at five games. Douglas is batting .563 (9-16) during that stretch, while Marder is hitting .375 (6-16).
JUAREZ CLOSING IN ON RECORDS
The climb to the top of several categories in the Ohio State pitching record book is nearly complete for senior Jamee Juarez. She has pitched 670.2 innings in her career, which are 6.2 innings shy of the school record held by Katie Chain (677.1, 2000-03). Last weekend, Juarez moved past Kristi DeVries (2001-04) into second-place all-time in strikeouts with 626 (Chain owns record with 692).
Juarez’s 64 wins are three shy of Chain’s school record 67 wins and her 22 shutouts are four shy of Chain’s school record 26. Juarez ranks fourth in complete games with 59. Belinda Cernava Quisenberry (1990-93) ranks third with 60.
In addition, Juarez ranks third all-time at Ohio State in runs batted in with 112.
RECORD BOOK WATCH
In addition to senior Jamee Juarez, several other Buckeyes are moving up the career record charts. Senior Nycole Koyano owns 104 walks, which rank second in OSU history and are 12 shy of the school record. She ranks second all-time in stolen bases (71) and fourth all-time in runs scored (141, 1 shy of second place). If Koyano leads the Buckeyes in runs this season, she will be the first to do that all four years.
Senior Megan Schwab is third all-time with 44 doubles (1 shy of No. 2) and fourth with 18 home runs. Schwab’s 107 RBI are fourth and her 111 runs scored are sixth. She has started 99 consecutive games for the Buckeyes, the longest streak on the team.
Sam Marder’s 33 walks this season are already an OSU freshman record and her 31 runs batted in are five shy of the record 36 set by Jamee Juarez in 2004.
Five Buckeyes rank among the Top 15 in career batting average at Ohio State, including Brittany Vanderink (.333), Liz Caputo (.324), Nycole Koyano (.318), Megan Schwab (.314) and Jamee Juarez (.296).
LAST WEEK: OSU SPLITS AT NO. 7 NU
If an 11 day layoff wasn’t enough of a challenge, the Buckeyes were asked the shake off the rust at No. 7 Northwestern last weekend. Ohio State responded with a 5-3 win in nine innings Friday on the home field of the defending Big Ten champ and national runner-up.
OSU sophomore Courtney Pruner homered twice off 2006 Big Ten Pitcher of the Year Eileen Canney, including a three-run bomb in the top of the ninth inning. Sophomore Kim Reeder went eight innings for the win and senior Jamee Juarez earned her third save. Saturday, Ohio State came back from an 0-2 deficit behind home runs from senior Megan Schwab and freshman Sam Marder, but NU scored three runs in the top of the seventh for the 5-3 win.
HEAD COACH Linda Kalafatis
Head coach Linda Kalafatis is in her 11th season at Ohio State and in her 19th season as a collegiate head coach. She is OSU’s all-time wins leader (356-246, .591) and is one of three Big Ten coaches with more than 600 career wins (629-361-2, .634). Six times the Buckeyes have won at least 30 games under Kalafatis, who has guided OSU to the NCAA tournament three times (2002, 2004, 2006). She is assisted by former collegiate All-Americans Ali Viola (Nebraska) and Erica Beach (Arizona State).
