COLUMBUS, Ohio – For the second time this weekend, senior Lauren Daykin came up with the big hit for the Ohio State softball team, this time delivering a game-winning RBI double in the sixth inning to send the Buckeyes past Wisconsin, 4-3, Sunday in game one of a doubleheader at Buckeye Field.
Ohio State (20-13, 3-0 Big Ten) improves to 5-0 at home this season, while Wisconsin (16-10, 0-3 Big Ten) falls to 2-7 on the road.
With two outs in the sixth inning and the game tied, 3-3, Daykin (Melbourne, Australia/Manatee C.C., Fla.) sent a shot to left-centerfield that hit two feet below the top of the wall, bringing home senior Jamee Juarez (La Puente, Calif./Wilson), who had singled. Senior Christina Douglas (Mesa, Ariz./Dobson) moved Juarez into scoring position with one of three OSU sacrifice bunts in the game.
Sophomore Kim Reeder (Salinas, Calif./Notre Dame H.S.) went the distance for Ohio State, improving to 11-5 on the season with nine strikeouts. She scattered seven hits, walked two and gave up just one run in a bases-loaded jam in the fifth inning.
Wisconsin senior Eden Brock (8-6) allowed four earned runs in 5.2 innings of work.
The Buckeyes scored in the bottom of the first when senior Nycole Koyano (Walnut, Calif./Walnut) hit a lead-off single through the right side, moved to second on a sacrifice slap to short by junior Brittany Vanderink (Hiram, Ohio/Crestwood) and scored on a single up the middle by freshman Sam Marder (Calabasas, Calif./Calabasas). The RBI for Marder was already her 30th of the season, just six shy of the OSU freshman RBI record.
The Badgers loaded the bases in the top of the third inning and took a 2-1 lead on an RBI single through the left side by Katie Hnatyk and an RBI ground out to short by Ricci Robben.
Ohio State reclaimed the lead with two runs in the fourth. Senior Megan Schwab (Glendale, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain) led off the frame with a single to center and later scored on an RBI single to center by Douglas. Sophomore Courtney Pruner (Akron, Ohio/Ellet) walked and later scored on a wild pitch.
Wisconsin answered with a run in the top of the fifth to tie game at 3-3. The Badgers loaded the bases thanks to a walk, infield single and a hit batter, but were held to one run thanks to a force out at the plate by Koyano from shortstop, a fly out and a ground out.
The Buckeyes and Badgers will meet in game two Sunday at 2:15 p.m.
