– The extra-inning game was the first for Ohio State since a 10-inning win over No. 25 Auburn last May 18 in the NCAA tournament in Tucson, Ariz. The Buckeyes were 5-4 in extra-inning games last season.
– Sam Marder’s five walks in the game topped the previous school record of four set twice, first by Julie Bauman in 1999 at Michigan and last season by Courtney Pruner against Central Michigan in Columbus.
– Buckeyes at the plate: With three hits for Brittany Vanderink and one for Christina Douglas, both players went over the 100 career hit mark in the game. Vanderink now has 101 career hits and Douglas has 100, becoming the fourth and fifth current Buckeyes with 100 or more career hits, joining Megan Schwab (174), Nycole Koyano (171) and Jamee Juarez (149) … Vanderink has both of the team’s three-hit games so far this season.
– Buckeyes in the circle: Ohio State pitchers have thrown complete games in seven of the last eight games.
– Buckeyes in the field: Freshman Leah Ledford made her first collegiate start Friday night (right field) … freshman Sam Marder, who has started all 18 games this season, made her first start at third base.
– Weather: Clear and 74 degrees at first pitch. No wind.
– Ohio State and Hofstra met for the first time in softball Friday.
– Hofstra returns six starters and three all-conference selections from its 2006 team that won its 10th-consecutive league championship, the last five of which have come in the Colonial Athletic Association. In 2004, the Pride came within one win of the Women’s College World Series.
