CLEARWATER, Fla. – Freshman Sam Marder’s two-run home run in the first inning gave the Ohio State softball team an early lead, but it was all Central Michigan after that as the Buckeyes dropped a 5-2 decision Friday at the USF adidas Invitational at Eddie C. Moore Complex in Clearwater. After winning twice yesterday, the Buckeyes fall to 9-8, while the Chippewas improve to 5-10.
The homer by Marder (Calabasas, Calif./Calabasas) was her team-leading seventh of the season and give her a team-best 18 runs batted in, but Ohio State had just two hits the rest of the way as CMU pitcher Ali Pettit struck (4-5) struck out nine and walked only one to beat Virginia Tech (15-6) and Ohio State in back-to-back outings in Clearwater.
Ohio State sophomore Kim Reeder (Salinas, Calif./Notre Dame H.S.) saw her personal four-game win streak come to an end. Reeder (6-3) struck out three, walked one, allowed six hits and four earned runs.
Marder singled in the sixth for a two-hit game, while the other two OSU hits came from senior Jamee Juarez (La Puente, Calif./Wilson) with a single in the second and junior Brittany Vanderink (Hiram, Ohio/Crestwood), who singled in the first and came home on Marder’s homer.
In addition to its win over Virginia Tech yesterday, Central Michigan also has a win this season over Auburn, which knocked Ohio State out of the NCAA tournament a year ago. The Chippewas are currently on a 10-day, 13-game trip in Florida.
Next up, the Buckeyes face Hofstra at 6:30 p.m. Friday in Clearwater.
