COLUMBUS, Ohio – Sophomore Kim Reeder threw her second no-hitter of the season and struck out nine as the Ohio State softball team won its home opener at Buckeye Field Sunday, 9-1, in five innings over Oakland in the first game of the doubleheader. The Buckeyes (13-10) scored four runs in both the third and fourth innings to win their fifth-consecutive home opener, taking advantage of four errors by the Golden Grizzlies (4-12)
The no-hitter by Reeder (Salinas, Calif./Notre Dame H.S.) is the second of her career, the first of which came three weeks ago in a 3-1 win at Alabama-Birmingham. Under 11th-year head coach Linda Kalafatis, Reeder (9-3) is the first Buckeye to throw two no-hitters in the same season and the effort is the first no-hitter at Buckeye Field since April 17, 2002, when Kristi DeVries no-hit Morehead State.
Reeder retired the last eight Oakland hitters of the game after leaving four base runners stranded in the first three innings. The Golden Grizzlies scored their lone run unearned in the third inning on an OSU error.
The Buckeyes collected eight hits in the game, including three by senior Jamee Juarez (La Puente, Calif./Wilson), who also drove in three runs. Providing two hits each were junior Brittany Vanderink (Hiram, Ohio/Crestwood) and sophomore Courtney Pruner (Akron, Ohio/Ellet), who also drove in three runs and scored a career-high three runs.
Pruner and Juarez took turns doing most of the damage. In the third, Pruner hit a two-RBI single and Juarez followed with a run-scoring single, while in the fourth, Pruner drove in one run with a single and Juarez then knocked a two-run double.
Ohio State and Oakland meet in game two Sunday at approximately 4 p.m.
