COLUMBUS, Ohio – The heavy rains that cancelled Saturday’s games of the Sixth Annual Ohio Collegiate Charity Classic, hosted by the Ohio State softball program, have made the fields at OSU’s Fred Beekman Park unplayable for Sunday’s games, as well. The event, which benefits the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research, raised $20,000 last year.
A donation total for this year’s event will be announced at a later date. A total of 19 collegiate varsity teams from around Ohio, including 10 of the 11 Division I programs, were scheduled to compete in the event.
“There were a lot of teams excited about competing this weekend and we were expecting great crowds, as always,” Linda Kalafatis, Ohio State head coach, said. “It’s very disappointing, but we have had just too much rain today to have the fields playable for tomorrow. We certainly appreciate the efforts of all the people who helped us get ready for this weekend, so no doubt it’s terribly disappointing.”
The Buckeyes, 39-23 last year, will compete next Sunday at a fall tournament at Miami (Ohio).
