COLUMBUS, Ohio – Clubbing three homeruns among its first six at bats of the game, the Ohio State softball team cruised past a visiting Butler squad, 10-0, Tuesday afternoon in game one of a double-header at Buckeye Field. The victory is Ohio State’s 20th of the season, marking the eighth-consecutive season the Buckeyes have collected at least 20 wins, all under eighth-year head coach Linda Kalafatis.
Ohio State (20-12, 2-2 Big Ten) scored eight runs in the first inning as junior Karisa Evans (Franklin, Ohio/Franklin) hit a three-run homerun, freshman Jamee Juarez (La Puente, Calif./Wilson) blasted a two-run homer and sophomore Chelsea Baker (Gahanna, Ohio/DeSales) added a solo homer all before Butler recorded its first out. The Buckeyes sent 13 batters to the plate in the frame, with senior Breana Pozzi (Petaluma, Calif./Casa Grande) and sophomore Stacy Hibma (Buena Park, Calif./Valley Christian) knocking singles and freshman Megan Schwab (Glendale, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain) adding an RBI double.
“We pretended like it was 0-0 when we scored eight runs in the first inning,” Pozzi said. “We tried to put pressure on ourselves when we had the lead so that when we play Michigan (this weekend) we will be prepared.”
The Buckeyes added another run in the third inning as junior Jennifer Johnson (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada) singled and later scored on an RBI single by freshman Nycole Koyano (Walnut, Calif./Walnut). Ohio State then ended the scoring with a run in the fourth inning as Juarez smacked a double and then scored on an RBI single by Pozzi. Juarez pitched the first four innings for Ohio State, striking out three hitters and allowing four hits to improve to 10-5 on the season. Sophomore Andrea Tribuzi (Plano, Texas/Plano East) worked the fifth inning without giving up a hit.
Baker added a single in the second inning to finish the day 2-for-2 and extend her current hitting streak to nine consecutive games, which is Ohio State’s longest hitting streak this season. Juarez and Pozzi both went 2-for-3 in the contest, while Evans’ three RBI marked her new career high.
Butler falls to 7-24 on the season. These two teams will meet in the second game of the double-header Tuesday evening.
