Ohio State Softball Falls 4-0 in Game Two vs. Iowa – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State softball team (29-20; 5-9 Big Ten) lost to Iowa (33-18; 11-3 Big Ten), 4-0 in game two Sunday afternoon at Pearl Field in Iowa City, Iowa. Iowa scored two runs in the first and fourth innings to capture the Hawkeyes’ 11th Big Ten victory this season. Buckeye pitcher Chelsea Baker moved to 6-3 on the season and Iowa’s Lisa Birocci improved to 16-9 on the year.
The Buckeyes tallied three hits for the game. Freshman Christina Douglas (Mesa, Ariz./Dobson) hit a ball that fell fair directly inside the left-field line in the second, Karisa Evans (Jr.; Franklin, Ohio/Franklin) singled to left field in the third and pinch hitter Billie Jo Carder (So.; Celina, Ohio/Celina) singled at the top of the seventh.
In the top of the first, Iowa’s Stacy May reached first on a fielder’s choice and scored when teammate Lisa Birocci nailed a homerun up the middle. The Hawkeyes led 2-0 at the end of the top of the first.
Buckeye Douglas singled in the bottom of the second and advanced to second on a wild pitch, but was left on base.
In the bottom of the third, Rowlands walked, but was caught stealing second. Evans reached first on a single to left field, but was left on base to end the third inning.
Iowa racked up two more runs in the top of the fourth. With two outs, Sarah Thomson singled to left field and was once again brought home by an Emily Gerlick homerun over centerfield, which sent Iowa up 4-0.
In the bottom of the seventh, Ohio State pinch hitter Carder started things off by hitting a single to first base. Carder moved to second when Megan Schwab (Fr.; Glendale, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain) was walked; however, both Buckeye base runners were left on base when Iowa tallied three consecutive Buckeye outs. Ohio State plays host to Wright State at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Buckeye Field in Columbus, Ohio.
