STOCKTON, Calif. – The Ohio State softball team was dealt an 8-0 loss at No. 18 Pacific Wednesday afternoon in Stockton, Calif., in day two of the Buckeyes’ spring break trip. The loss snaps Ohio State’s five game winning streak and a personal six game winning streak by Buckeye senior pitcher Kristi DeVries, who suffered defeat for the first time since Feb. 27.
Ohio State (17-8) tied a season with five errors in the game, which contributed to seven of Pacific’s eight runs being unearned. Pacific (19-8) out-hit the Buckeyes by just two hits, 7-5.
Freshman Megan Schwab (Glendale, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain) knocked her team-leading fifth double of the season to lead Ohio State at the plate. Junior Natalie Hales (Canton, Ohio/Eastern Michigan) went 1-for-1 with a walk.
DeVries struck out one batter in two innings of work. Freshman Jamee Juarez (La Puente, Calif./Wilson) struck out three hitters in 2.2 innings of relief.
Ohio State had at least one runner on base every inning and loaded the bases in the fourth inning, but the Buckeyes left nine runners stranded to fall in their first game against a ranked team since Feb. 29.
Pacific scored five runs in the second inning, four of which were unearned and came with two outs. The Tigers’ run in the fourth inning and both runs in the fifth inning were also unearned as the game ended by the eight run mercy rule in the fifth inning.
Ohio State will conclude its spring break trip Friday with a double-header at No. 15 Fresno State beginning at 6 p.m.
