Ohio State Softball Falls to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in Finals, 6-0 – Ohio State Buckeyes

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Ohio State softball team dropped a 6-0 decision to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Sunday afternoon in the championship game of the Winthrop Invitational in Rock Hill, S.C. The Buckeyes posted a 5-1 record during the weekend and placed two players, Chelsea Baker and Megan Schwab, on the all-tournament team.
Ohio State (12-7) was shut out for the first time in nine games, a streak dating back to a 1-0 loss to Virginia Tech Feb. 28. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi improves to 17-14 on the season.
Baker (Gahanna, Ohio/DeSales) batted .467 during the tournament with a double and a homerun. She pitched 15 innings without giving up an earned run and totaled 11 strikeouts. Schwab (Glendale, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain) batted .389 during the weekend with two doubles, a homerun and six RBI.
Freshman Nycole Koyano (Walnut, Calif./Walnut) led the Buckeyes at the plate in the championship game with a pair of singles, while senior Breana Pozzi (Petaluma, Calif./Casa Grande) and junior Natalie Hales (Canton, Ohio/Eastern Michigan) both smacked doubles.
The Buckeyes loaded the bases in the fourth inning but were held from scoring. Ohio State stranded 11 runners on the bases during the game.
Freshman Jamee Juarez (La Puente, Calif./Wilson) suffered the loss on the mound. She struck out five batters in four innings of work. Sophomore Chelsea Baker (Gahanna, Ohio/DeSales) worked the final two innings, striking out two without giving up an earned run. Ohio State will return to action Feb. 19-21 as host of the Buckeye Invitational in Columbus. Ohio State will take on Loyola-Chicago at 4 p.m. Friday at Buckeye Field in the team’s first home game of the season.
