No. 25 Softball Downs Toledo, 8-0, In Game One – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio– The No. 25 Ohio State softball team recaptured its winning ways Wednesday with an 8-0 victory in game one over visiting Toledo (5-19, 2-8). Katie Chain (Sr., North Canton, Ohio) pitched five innings and struck out five batters and four different Buckeyes had multiple hit games to lead the Buckeye charge.
Karisa Evans (So., Franklin, Ohio) and Kristi DeVries (Jr., Corona, Calif.) led the way for the Buckeyes offensively, each going 2-for-3 with two RBI’s. Ashley Cutcliff (So., Zionsville, Ind.) and Rogeanna Hottinger (Sr., Newark, Ohio) also went 2-for-3 for Ohio State while Kristine Himes (Sr., Bolivar, Ohio) went 1-for-2 with a run scored.
Sitting on a 3-0 lead, Ohio State ended the game early by scoring five runs in the bottom of the fifth. The inning was highlighted by a DeVries two-RBI single to center field, scoring Dedic and Himes. The game ended when Cutcliff stole home as UT’s Jessica Horn threw out Hottinger attempting to steal second. The Buckeyes took advantage of two Toledo errors in the inning to score the other two runs.
The Buckeyes controlled the game from the outset as they took a 3-0 lead in the second inning. DeVries started the scoring rally in the second as she led off the inning with a sharp double to center field. DeVries then quickly advanced to third on a single through the left side by Cutcliff and scored off a Hottinger base hit. Evans drove in Cutcliff and Hottinger two hitters later with a single to center to give OSU the 3-0 advantage after two. Chain, who allowed only two hits and one walk, picked up the win to improve her record to 8-7. Toledo’s Kim Pettitt (1-12) took the loss as she scattered nine Buckeye hits over 4.2 innings.
