After more than an hour of a lightning delay, the Ohio State softball team (24-22; 4-10 Big Ten) beat Marshall (40-14; 20-4 MAC), 3-2, Wednesday afternoon at Buckeye Field in Columbus, Ohio. With two outs, catcher Stacy Hibma (Fr., Buena Park, Calif.) nailed a double to left field to bring in the two winning runs at the end of the seventh inning. Junior pitcher Kristi DeVries (Corona, Calif.) earned the win and improved to 11-9, while Marshall’s Randi Nielson moved to 22-5 on the season.
Marshall entered the seventh inning with a 2-1 advantage. Ohio State senior Annie Dedic (Yorba Linda, Calif.) pinch hit for shortstop Jennifer Johnson (So., La Mirada, Calif.) and was walked. Sophomore Meghan Rowlands (Hilliard, Ohio) was then brought in to pinch run for Dedic and advanced to second off a Jenn Link (Sr., Yorba Linda, Calif.) single to left field. Rowlands and Link moved to third and second base, respectively, when outfielder Karisa Evans (So., Franklin, Ohio) grounded out to first base. Senior Rogeanna Hottinger (Newark, Ohio) was intentionally walked to load the bases before Hibma stepped up to nail her double to left field, which brought home Rowlands and Link and gave the non-conference win to the Buckeyes.
The Thundering Herd scored first at the top of the fourth inning when De’Shaun Drake reached first on an Ohio State error, advanced to third off an Allison Webb single to right center and crossed home when teammate Noelle Adams, who pinch ran for Webb, was caught stealing.
Ohio State responded at the bottom of the fourth when Hibma hit a solo shot homerun to left field.
In the sixth, Marshall regained the lead when Amanda Williams reached first on an error by the Buckeyes and advanced to second on the throw before crossing home plate off a single by Drake to right center field. However, Ohio State’s Hibma stepped up at the bottom of the seventh and helped the Buckeyes break a five-game losing streak.
