Buckeye Softball Earns 6-0 Win Over Marshall in Five Innings – Ohio State Buckeyes

Fighting to get the second game of a doubleheader in before dark fell Wednesday afternoon, the Ohio State softball team (25-23; 4-10 Big Ten) beat 2003 MAC Champion Marshall (40-15; 20-4 MAC), 6-0, in five innings at Buckeye Field in Columbus. Senior pitcher Katie Chain (Bolivar, Ohio) was credited with the win and improved to 11-12 overall. Marshall pitcher De’Shaun Drake moved to 8-4 on the year. The game was called after five innings due to darkness.
Ohio State scored all six of their runs in the third inning. After sophomore Meghan Rowlands (Hilliard, Ohio) and senior Jenn Link (Yorba Linda, Calif.) reached on consecutive fielder’s choices and stole second and third, respectively, sophomore outfielder Karisa Evans (Franklin, Ohio) was walked, which loaded the bases for the Buckeyes. The next two plays walked both senior Rogeanna Hottinger (Newark, Ohio) and freshman Stacy Hibma (Buena Park, Calif.) and gave the two Buckeye players each an RBI , which Rowlands and Link were forced home due to the back-to-back walks.
Marshall reacted by reliving Drake with Sarah Chamberlain on the mound, but third baseman Kristine Himes (Sr., Bolivar, Ohio) nailed a homerun to left field and brought home Evans, Hottinger and Hibma to up the score to 6-0.
Marshall recorded two hits, but could not convert. The Ohio State defense tightened things up in the final inning by going three-up three-down and securing the win before darkness fell on Columbus. Ohio State travels to Akron to take on the Zips in a single game at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 1, at Firestone Stadium before closing their regular-season schedule at home vs. Penn State at 1 p.m. May 3 and 4.
