Iowa, who was the home team in the second game today, got things started early by scoring the first run in the bottom of the first inning. Hawkeye senior Katie Boney reached first base due to an error by Chain and advanced to second off a sacrifice fly by Stacy May. Boney crossed the plate off a Christina Schmaltz single.
The Hawkeyes scored their final two runs in the bottom of the third. Natalie Johnson singled to left field, stole second and was brought home when May hit a single up the middle and advanced to second on the throw. Schmaltz, who went 2-for-3, scored May off a single to left field.
In both the fifth and seventh innings, Ohio State had opportunities to score with the bases loaded but the Buckeyes were unable to convert. Iowa’s defense was strong, as the Hawkeyes executed consecutive double plays at the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings.
Ohio State travels to Athens, Ohio, to take on the Bobcats in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 16.
