For the second time in three games, it took extra innings for the No. 25 Ohio State softball team (19-15; 2-3 Big Ten) to fall to No. 25 Iowa (26-8; 5-1 Big Ten), 7-0, Sunday afternoon at Buckeye Field. The Buckeyes and the Hawkeyes were scoreless until the top of the 10th inning, when Iowa laid on seven runs to earn the conference victory. Ohio State junior pitcher Kristi DeVries (Corona, Calif./Corona) continued to be solid for the Buckeyes from the mound by striking out six Iowa batters.
“I thought we had better at-bat’s today,” Linda Kalafatis, Ohio State head coach, said. “Unfortunately, the results were not there.”
One of the most significant strikeouts for DeVries was at the top of the fifth inning, when Iowa had two outs, the bases were loaded and Lindsey Bashor was caught looking with a full count. However, the Hawkeyes turned up the heat offensively in the top of the 10th and secured the victory.
Iowa’s Jessica Bashor opened the 10th with a single to the shortstop and advanced to second off a sacrifice bunt by Lindsey Bashor. Hawkeye pitcher Lisa Birocci doubled to left field, which brought in Bashor and put the first run of the day on the scoreboard. Despite left fielder Megan Rowlands (So., Hilliard, Ohio) getting the second out for OSU by making a tough catch on a fly ball from the next batter (Iowa’s Sarah Thomson) the Hawkeyes combined a six-run streak with four Buckeye errors to bring home Lisa Birocci, Amanda Hentges, Katie Boney, Natalie Johnson, Stacy May and Christina Schmaltz.
Iowa’s Birocci was credited with the win and moved to 15-5 on the season.
