Box Score
HONOLULU, Hawai’i– The No. 16 Ohio State softball team (15-8) took advantage of two Hawai’i errors, clutch hitting and solid pitching to snap a two game skid as they defeated the Hawai’i Rainbow Wahine (16-12, 2-2) Saturday, 4-0, in game 10 of the Chevron Invitational. Katie Chain (Sr., North Canton, Ohio) pitched a complete game, recording 11 strikeouts and Meghan Rowlands (So., Hilliard, Ohio) went 2-for-3 with a run scored, one RBI and two stolen bases to lead the Buckeyes.
Rowlands, Karisa Evans (So., Franklin, Ohio), and Kristi DeVries (Jr., Corona, Calif.) each recorded two hits for the Buckeyes and Annie Dedic (Sr., Yorba Linda, Calif.) went 1-for-3 with two RBI’s to lead the Buckeyes offensively. Ashley Cutcliff (So., Zionsville, Ind.) and Breana Pozzi (Jr., Petaluma, Calif.) each had a hit for OSU.
Chain (6-4) went the distance for OSU to earn the win as she gave up seven hits and no walks. Melissa Coogan (13-6) got the loss for Hawai’i as she scattered nine hits and four runs (three unearned) over six innings.
The Buckeyes started the scoring in the second as they took a 3-0 lead. Pozzi reached first courtesy of an error by UH second baseman Noelle Izumi to lead off inning. Jennifer Johnson (So., La Mirada, Calif.) then sacrificed Pozzi to second and Rogeanna Hottinger (Sr., Newark, Ohio) reached first on error by UH right fielder Tracie Uchima. After Hottinger stole second to put runners at second and third, Meghan Rowlands (So., Hilliard, Ohio) knocked in Pozzi with a single to left. Karisa Evans (So., Franklin, Ohio) then drove in Hottinger on a fielder’s choice to short and Dedic then finished the scoring with a base hit to left field, scoring Evans from third. The Buckeyes added another run in the fourth as Rowlands and Evans started things out with back-to-back singles. Rowlands then stole third and Dedic drove her in with a sacrifice fly to center field.
The Rainbow Wahine were led by Izumi, Stacey Porter and Kate Judd as they recorded two hits apiece. Hawai’i had runners in scoring position in the first, fourth and fifth innings, but were unable to convert.
The No. 2 seed Buckeyes will now take on the No. 3 seed Wisconsin Badgers at 5 p.m. Saturday.
