COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State softball team (5-0) defeated Kent State (4-1), 3-0, Sunday in the fifth and final game of the third-annual Ohio Collegiate Charity Classic. The Buckeyes fashioned a perfect 5-0 record in the two-day tournament, which was attended by 10 of the 11 NCAA Division I softball programs in the state.
Ohio State freshman Jamee Juarez (LaPuente, Calif./Wilson) pitched all seven innings and scattered six hits while collecting six strikeouts. Kent State loaded the bases with no outs in the third inning, but Juarez induced the Golden Flashes into three straight ground ball outs to work out of the jam. After the third inning, Juarez allowed just two hits and four base runners the rest of the game.
The Buckeyes scored one run in the second, third and fifth innings. In the third inning, senior Kristi DeVries (Corona, Calif./Corona) led off the inning with a single and later scored on a single by senior Breana Pozzi (Petaluma, Calif./Casa Grande). In the third inning, junior Meghan Rowlands (Hilliard, Ohio/Bishop Ready) reached on a throwing error and later scored on an RBI ground out by Juarez. In the fifth inning, freshman Megan Schwab (Glendale, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain) singled and later scored on a KSU throwing error.
Ohio State sophomores Stacy Hibma (Buena Park, Calif./Valley Christian) and Billie Jo Carder (Celina, Ohio/Celina) both added two hits to the Buckeye offensive attack. Carder’s triple to left field in the fifth inning marked the lone extra base hit of the game.
Ken State pitchers Kate Leary, who suffered the loss, and Brittany Robinson combined to notch three strikeouts for the Golden Flashes. Marci Ridenbaugh led the KSU offense with a 3-for-3 day at the plate. The Ohio Collegiate Charity Classic is an annual tournament with state of Ohio schools benefiting the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Brest Cancer Research at the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute.
Ohio State will continue its fall schedule next weekend at the Wright State Fall Tournament.
