Box Score
The Ohio State softball team (3-0) beat Youngstown State (2-2), 1-0, in game three of the third-annual Ohio Collegiate Charity Classic Sunday. Freshman Nycole Koyano (Walnut, Calif./Walnut) scored the only run of the game in the first inning and that would prove to be enough for a Buckeye victory. Sophomore pitcher Chelsea Baker (Gahanna, Ohio/DeSales), who threw five strikes on the day, allowed four hits and was 1-for-2 at the plate, earned the win from the mound for Ohio State. YSU’s Ashley Lockmiller was credited with the loss.
Koyano reached first on a Penguin error by the second base player and stole second when fellow freshman Christina Douglas (Mesa, Ariz./Dobson) flied out to right field. Baker was walked on the nest play and Koyano and Baker stole second and third base, respectively. Freshman Jamee Juarez (La Puente, Calif./Wilson) grounded out to the shortstop and earned the RBI when Koyano crossed home.
At the bottom of the seventh inning and with one out, YSU threatened to score after Amber Smith singled to left field and moved to second off a Char Kudlock sacrifice bunt. Erin Moore was hit by a pitch, which put runners on first and second with two outs. However, Ohio State’s shortstop B.J. Carder (Celina, Ohio/Celina) threw YSU’s Tiffany Patteson out at first base to lock in the OSU victory.
Ohio State plays two more games Sunday in the final day of the Ohio Collegiate Charity Classic. The Buckeye take on Ohio University and Kent State at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively. The Ohio Collegiate Charity Classic is an annual tournament with state of Ohio schools benefiting the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research at the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute.
