The Ohio State softball team (2-0) beat Bowling Green (1-1), 1-0, in game two of the third-annual Ohio Collegiate Charity Classic Saturday afternoon. Senior pitcher Kristi DeVries (Corona, Calif./Corona) and the Buckeye defense combined to create an Ohio State victory. Freshman Jamee Juarez (La Puente, Calif./Wilson) scored the lone run of the game in the fourth inning; Catcher Stacy Hibma (Buena Park, Calif./Valley Christian) was credited with the RBI. Bowling Green’s pitcher Liz Vrabel was the losing pitcher.
At the bottom of the fourth inning, after a single to right field, Juarez advanced to second base off a DeVries’ hit. Hibma, who was 2-for-3 for the game, doubled down the left-field line, which brought Juarez home.
Bowling Green threatened to score in each of the final two innings by having two runners on base with two outs, but DeVries caught Jenifer Kernahan swinging to close the top of the sixth and second base player Jennifer Johnson (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada) threw to shortstop B.J. Carder (Celina, Ohio/Celina) to get the third and final out of the game at the top of the seventh inning.
The Buckeyes play three games Sunday in the final day of the Ohio Collegiate Charity Classic. Ohio State takes on Youngstown State, Ohio University and Kent State at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively. The Ohio Collegiate Charity Classic is an annual tournament with state of Ohio schools benefiting the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research at the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute.
