COLUMBUS, Ohio- The Ohio State softball team remained perfect on the year with a 6-0 victory in a shortened contest with the Toreros of San Diego at the Tournament of Champions in Northridge, Calif., Friday. The Buckeyes scored in the first four innings of the game to move to 2-0 on the year as USD slipped to 4-6 with the loss. Kristi DeVries (So., Corona, Calif./Corona) pitched five shutout innings and Anna Smith scored twice to lead OSU to the win in a game that was called after five innings because of darkness.
DeVries opened the game inside the circle and retired 3-of-5 batters on strikeouts. The OSU offense also went to work early with Smith reaching first on a slap single, stealing second base and later scoring on a single from Stacy Roth (Sr., Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon). Chrissy Fowler (Sr., Utica, Ohio/Wright State) added a two out double but was stranded on the base paths at the end of the inning.
Another quite top half of the inning for the Toreros was followed by a Sarah West (Sr., Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) walk and stolen base by pinch runner Meghan Rowlands (Fr., Hilliard, Ohio/Bishop Ready) and a fielder’s choice to put Breana Pozzi (So., Petaluma, Calif./Casa Grande) on board. Pozzi scored one batter later on a DeVries double to bring the Buckeye advantage to 2-0.
USD sent three to the plate in the third with DeVries retiring the side on two strike outs and a line drive back up the middle. OSU added to its lead with three runs in the bottom half of the third. Smith led off with a single and her second stolen base of the game. Wendy Allen (So., Moreno Valley, Calif./Moreno Valley) plated Smith with a double and touched home plate herself on a Fowler single. Fowler scored one batter latter on a single by Kristine Himes (Jr., Bolivar, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley). The fourth inning was more of the same for both teams as the Toreros went down in order and the Buckeyes scoring their final run of the game. Amy Ellis (Jr., Erie, Pa./McDowell) entered the game in the fifth and opened the stanza with a single. Ellis took second and third on an errant throw by pitcher Jen Delpit and scored when pinch hitter Rogeanna Hottinger (Jr., Newark, Ohio/Newark) hit to right field and was thrown out at first.
USD sent four batters to the plate in the final inning with one walk before a strike out and two put outs ended its inning and OSU went down in order to close out the game. DeVries went the distance for the Buckeyes allowing three hits and striking out seven for her first win of the year.
